Once the timepiece measures a parasite count of 50, and alarm sounds and a brightly colored picture of a mosquito appears. The patent pertains to what they are calling a "Squiggle motor". it is touted as being Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) "safe" and can now be used for such applications as implantable and wearable drug-delivery pumps. July 21, 2000 - NEC Research Institute, Inc., has just announced that they have produced a means of making a laser travel faster than the speed of light. The laser was shot through cesium vapor, and left the chamber holding the vapor even before it entered. This is in strict contrast to the notion that nothing travels faster then light in a vacuum. May 14, 2000 - Judge William Young is to decide in a U S District court if the claims for Amgen's patent (5,955,422) are too broad. Amgen produces a drug called Epogen, made for anaemics to assist with red blood cell production. It seems that Transkaryotic Therapies, Inc. (TKT) is manufacturing their own version of the drug. Instead of inserting human gene into the cell of a hamster to produce the protein, TKT produces the protein by inserting a promoter into human genes which are said to stimulate the human cells to produce the protein. Amgen claims that this is a violation of their claims because it requires the use of human blood cells--which are mammalian --which they lay claim to. April 20, 2000 - The United States Patent and Trademark office issued a patent (6,047,104) to Cheng Power Systems of Mountain View, California on the 4th of this month. The invention apparently is capable of doing away with standard gearing used in an electric motor system. Instead, it relies upon electronic circuitry to control the speed.
